Heavy and extra-heavy crude streams can present difficult water and salt removal challenges. Treatment objectives depend on the feedstock and downstream specifications.
CODINAMEX proposes modular, on-site dehydration and desalting configurations for heavy, extra-heavy and light crude, subject to project engineering and feedstock testing.
Advantages of the Service:
Modular/Compact/Online Process.
Residence time must be established under the tested operating conditions.
Energy consumption requires measurement against a defined baseline.
The required footprint depends on throughput and site constraints.
Staffing requirements depend on the selected configuration and safety plan.
Equipment design, maintainability and expected service life are defined for each project and require engineering review.
Equipment sourcing and manufacturing responsibilities are defined in each project agreement.
The Codinamex Desalination equipment is integrated with multiple stages consisting of eight desalination phases. It can process Heavy Crude, Extra – Heavy and Light.
This technology applies thermodynamic phenomena based on the theories of dilutions and shocks, coalescence, in such a way that salinity levels are reduced quickly and efficiently in just two stages, with performance targets determined by feedstock, test conditions and customer specifications.

Inside the treatment process

Process integration
Dehydration and desalination are intended to address water and salts in contaminated hydrocarbon streams.

A practical operating view
Each application depends on feed characteristics, operating conditions and project requirements.

Dehydration and desalting: documented trial
The November 21, 2017 evaluation report records a trial at the Tula refinery in Hidalgo, Mexico, conducted October 20–29. It describes the CODINAMEX crude desalting and dehydration process, laboratory measurements and conclusions for the crude and conditions tested.
Reported result: the report concludes that the evaluated treated crude met its salt (<0.5 LMB) and water (<0.5%) criteria. This finding applies to the documented trial. A new installation needs feedstock analysis, engineering, pilot or acceptance tests, and project-specific guarantees.
